Food was originally meant for survival, not to become our favorite past time. We all get enjoyment from food. Getting together with friends and family, going on date’s, going to a ball game are all things that center around food. There isn’t anything wrong with that, if you make the right choices.
What is your relationship with food? Do you eat for health, energy, vitality, and longevity? Or, do you eat strictly for pleasure?
We all get in those slumps. Like that bad relationship you had that you knew was no good for you, but you kept going back. You eventually kick yourself for doing it, but we do it.
We all do it with food, too. We eat good. Make smart choices. Start to feel better, more energy, clothes getting looser. Then you have a weak moment. You give into temptation and blow the diet. Like that ex who you happen to bump into at the wrong time – next thing you know, your back in that horrible relationship again!
When you stumble back into that relationship with bad food or overeating it’s tough to break it off. Not just because of the willpower you may be lacking, but it’s actually biological. When you overeat, or eat bad foods, your blood sugar rises triggering a hormonal nightmare. Your body will become insulin resistant triggering more fat storage, and your brain will release a hormone that will actually tell you your hungry even when your not! All of a sudden your like a snowball rolling down hill, not being able to stop the fat from coming on.
My best advice is to always be conscious of how food is affecting you. Don’t eat to fast, you will be sure to overeat before your body tells you to stop. Pay attention to the foods that make you leave the table feeling energized and satisfied, opposed to stuffed and lethargic.
Food can be a tough drug to quit. It is always available, and we have to eat. You can’t delete it’s number, or “unfriend” it on Facebook. You have to have discipline. Just like any other healthy relationship – it requires effort.
